More people will be traveling during the 2021 holiday season compared to last year as travel restrictions are being lifted.

Precautions such as wearing masks in crowded areas and on airline flights are currently still recommended by the CDC, but many people that did not get to travel and visit with family and friends last year are excited to be able to travel again and are planning trips this holiday season.

According to Guesty, a vacation rental platform, reservation volume in the US is 377% higher this year than November and December 2020 and 91% higher than the same period in 2019. With the surge in holiday travelers this year, it’s a good idea to be prepared in advance to avoid problems and make this holiday season an enjoyable time to remember.

When traveling during the 2021 holiday season, be sure to pack plenty of patience and flexibility. If you are a drivable distance from your destination, traveling by car is the most reliable way to avoid delays and cancelations at the airport due to inclement weather and other issues.

If you are making hotel and airline reservations, do so early to ensure availability and check with your hotel and airline for customer-friendly change policies. Avoid non-refundable reservations and tickets even if they are less expensive. Many travel agencies are encouraging travelers to pad their trips with an extra day or two, just in case, and to check the status of their flight several days in advance.

To ensure peace of mind, so you can relax and enjoy your time visiting family and friends, create a list of everything you need to do before you leave, including preparing your home for being away. In addition to setting lights on a timer, make sure all doors and windows are locked, mail is on hold and a trusted neighbor knows you will be away.

If you are lucky enough to live in an Epcon community where most lawn care and landscaping is covered by the homeowners’ association, you’ll have a lot less to worry about while you’re traveling. It’s a philosophy called the “Lock & Leave Lifestyle,” and it’s a cornerstone of Epcon Communities’ approach to a more carefree, relaxed life.
