Vicki and Todd Love the Low-Maintenance Lifestyle

"We love coming back after trips. We walk in and go; ahh, this is great! We made the right decision."

Vicki and Todd Bender love to travel. One of their favorite destinations is visiting their daughter and grandkids in Columbus, OH. Because of frequent trips to Columbus, they decided to rent an apartment as a place to land while visiting.

One of the reasons Vicki and Todd were planning to rent instead of buy is they didn’t want to have to keep up with a large yard and home maintenance on a pre-owned house. They also didn’t want to end up in an older neighborhood where they didn’t know anyone and felt isolated. That was especially important since they planned to travel quite a bit now that they were both retired.

While apartment hunting in Columbus, Vicki was introduced to Epcon Communities by a friend who highly recommended their new homes and low-maintenance lifestyle. After visiting one of Epcon’s communities near Columbus, she got excited about the idea of building a new home with Epcon because of the low-maintenance lifestyle and the welcoming feeling of community. As Vicki put it, “When Epcon was suggested to us, it was a perfect fit. I thought, this is awesome. Everybody's going to be new, they're going to want to meet us, and we're going to want to meet them.”

When Vicki called Todd and said, “I think I found the house we want to build and buy!” he was surprised since Vicki was supposed to be looking for an apartment to rent. However, when Todd learned more about the Portico home design and Epcon Communities’ low-maintenance lifestyle, he realized building a new home with Epcon and moving to Ohio near their daughter was a perfect idea!

After building a house in the past that was almost completed when they purchased it, Vicki and Todd were looking forward to having more input into the design and style of their new home. They chose the Portico home design with a bonus suite. Todd mentioned, “Here, we got to personalize what the house was going to be and what it was going to look like. We liked that part. It was a good experience.”

Vicki and Todd love the open-layout design of the Portico, especially since they love to cook and entertain. The courtyard is easily accessible from the main living area and the second-floor bonus suite gives guests their own private suite when visiting.

When asked how they spend their free time now that they don’t have to worry about lawn maintenance, Vicki responded, “We travel, and we can see family and play pickleball!”

Todd mentioned, “Being able to be spontaneous, I think, has truly been a lot of fun. We just wake up and say, what are we going to do today?”

Vicki continued, “We love coming back after trips. We walk in and go; ahh, this is great! We made the right decision.”

Todd agreed, saying, “We like all the comforts of the place and the selections we made with the help of the designers at Epcon. It really makes you miss the house when you are gone. We walk back in and say, ahh, it feels so good to be back here!”
